Here we have one of the best baseball scenes in history. Game 1 of the 1988 World Series with the Oakland Athletics taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Heading into the bottom of the ninth the Dodgers were down 4-3.
Future Hall Of Famer, Dennis Eckersley came into the game to close it down for Oakland. He retired the first two batters before walking Mike Davis, something he rarely did in 1988. Eckersley only walked 11 guys in 72 and 2/3 IP during the 1988 season, a season where he had 45 saves, an ERA of 2.35, finished second overall in the Cy Young voting and fifth overall in AL MVP. He was a straight up stud that season.
That is why it's so shocking that he walked Mike Davis, but he was Eck, he'd get out of it. Especially with the pitchers spot up next. Tommy Lasorda even sent out the pitcher int the on-deck circle. Apparently the catcher got Eck's attention and pointed to the pitcher on-deck and maybe suggested to pitch around Davis? Nonetheless, a gimpy Kirk Gibson appeared off the bench to pinch hit once Davis drew the walk.Gibson had suffered injuries to both legs in the NLCS so it was unsure if he would be available to play in Game 1 of the Series. Rumor has it that he was in the trainers room getting worked on for much of the game while watching the game on TV. Vin Scully made a remark about Gibson being nowhere to be found, so he went out and told Lasorda that he was good to go if he needed a pinch hitter.
Gibson fought back from an 0-2 count to get to 3-2 against Eck, and that is when Eck laid a backdoor slider right over the plate. Gibson could barely stand, let alone swing a bat. He put his entire body into that swing and nearly falls over once finished with it, but he got just enough for the ball to get out. Dodgers walk it off with a 5-4 victory and that would propel them to win the 1988 World Series.
The call from Vin Scully is great, the call from Jack Buck is great, the fist pumps are great, his trot around the bases is one of the most famous and memorable sports moments in history, everything about the play is awesome. I mean you can really see the pain that Gibson was in as he trotted around the bases. He looks like he is running over a bed of legos, insanely uncomfortable.
